Sandwich inventor's family opening Disney shop
by Sarah Tully
Descendants of the inventor of the sandwich are planning to open
their first California restaurant at Downtown Disney in Anaheim,
Disney announced Tuesday (today).
Earl of Sandwich, which reportedly has a strong following, is
set to open this summer at a location currently occupied by Compass
Books and Cafe. There are 17 Earl locations worldwide, including at
Walt Disney World.
Earl of Sandwich shops have ties to the creator of the sandwich
- John Montagu, the 4th Earl of Sandwich, who made the first food
item in 1762. The 11th Earl is involved in the creation of the
current restaurants. Robert Earl, chairman of Earl of Sandwich,
joined with Disney to open the first location at Downtown Disney in
Orlando in 2004.
The shops are known for fresh artisan bread and meats roasted
with traditional family recipes, according to the company. The
shops serve signature hot sandwiches, including The Original 1762
made of roast beef, sharp cheddar and horseradish sauce. Breakfast
sandwiches and pastries, as well as drinks and other items, will be
available.
"We pride ourselves in giving our guests a unique experience at
Downtown Disney through different retail and food offerings," said
Tony Bruno, vice president of resort hotels and Downtown Disney, in
a statement. "This will be the only Earl of Sandwich in California
and it is sure to be a favorite among our guests as it has been at
Walt Disney World for nearly eight years."
Some Twitter users said they were excited about the new Earl
location.
Andrew Chai, who goes by @dirtysmokebbq on Twitter, said he
valet parks his car at the Planet Hollywood Casino in Las Vegas,
where an Earl location sits, to run in to buy sandwiches to take
home.
"I'm the biggest fan of Earl of Sandwich!" Chai wrote in an
email. "I have tried every sandwich, and go there religiously on
every Vegas trip."
The Compass store is set to close March 31, paving the way for
the construction of Earl of Sandwich.
The sandwich shop opening is among several changes ongoing at
Downtown Disney this spring.
